Contact the SC Senate Re: H5399

On Tuesday, August 30th, the South Carolina House of Representatives passed H5399, an abortion ban bill with exceptions for incest, rape and the life of the mother. On September 6th and 7th, this bill will be forwarded  to the Senate.

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) has strongly condemned the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs Jackson Women’s Health Organization. The decision overturns Roe v. Wade, ignoring the will of the American people.

AAUW believes everyone has the right to make decisions about their own reproductive lives without government interference.  Abortion access is vital to women’s ability to control their lives, bodies and futures. Without reproductive freedom, there can be no equity.

Being able to choose whether and when to become a parent improves women’s well-being and fosters economic security.  This is particularly important in a state like South Carolina that lacks accessible maternal health care, paid caregiving leave, and workplace protections for pregnant women.

South Carolina’s bills, H. 5399 and S.1373 are extreme, ignoring that healthcare decisions should be between a woman and her doctor. The ramifications of an abortion ban with limited exceptions will have a lasting impact on women’s mental and physical health, as well as on the welfare of her family.

AAUW in South Carolina, urges every single person to tell the SC House and SC Senate to vote NO on H 5399 and S 1373 or any similar bill.  These bans are dangerous to women.

Dear Legislators,

I am a South Carolina voter, and I demand that you protect abortion access and repeal all abortion restrictions in South Carolina.

Research and testimony from medical professionals show that being denied an abortion has serious consequences for a person’s health, personal well-being, family, and financial security. Women being denied an abortion live below the poverty level, can’t afford basic living expenses, take on more debt or bankruptcy, rarely put their child up for adoption, and struggle to take care of existing children.  Please read the www.TurnAwayStudy.com

H.5399 is unacceptable as a total abortion ban with a very narrow exceptions. It’s legislation that takes away decision making from a woman and her family.

In South Carolina we already face major restrictions on abortion care, but we are not backing down. Abortion should be legal, available, and affordable wherever we live—and we won’t stop until that vision is realized.

As a South Carolina voter, I want you to reject bans on abortion and protect abortion access in South Carolina and vote NO on H. 5399.

Sincerely,

(sign your name)
